A Review of Big Hero 6 for Classic Disney Fans

November 10, 2014

I have been eagerly anticipating the release of Big Hero 6 for the last few months. Everything I heard, and didn't hear, about it left me super intrigued. We made the night extra special by going to Downtown Disney on opening night. For those of you considering whether or not it's worth a watch (or if it's a flop...), here is my review of Big Hero 6! (with no spoilers!) Disney movie reviewBig Hero 6 is set in San Fransokyo, a futuristic city filled with incredible imagery and extraordinary detail. A special computer, Disney's Hyperion, was built to properly simulate the light reflection off every element in a scene. But beyond the ground-breaking animation is a story with so much heart. I have never had to hold back from laughing too loud in a movie theater before, but Big Hero 6 had me in stitches. I was laughing so hard in one scene, I started crying. And you care about the characters so much, that you instantly tear up when you see them in pain. Disney has created another incredibly lovable character with Baymax. In my opinion, Baymax is a much more special character than that other white, marshmallow character... Don't get me wrong, Olaf is amazing. But Baymax is so real. Saying this as a fully grown adult, I wish Baymax was real.

Disney also strikes again by creating a great message for kids. Stay in school, and you can do awesome things like robotics. For all the techy robotic fans out there, you will totally nerd out with the technology that Disney imagined in this movie. While all of it obviously isn't realistic, there are many things that are rooted in real-world engineering.

My husband wasn't nearly as excited to see Big Hero 6 as I was, but he came out an instant fan ("WAY better than Wreck-It Ralph!"). He really appreciated the anime-influenced graphics and the action-packed scenes. One element of Big Hero 6 that took us by surprise was the super hero-type storyline. It certainly isn't played up in the trailers, but the story has a classic super hero feel, with a Disney twist of course. If you are a comic book fan, make sure you stick around for the bonus scene after the credits!!

Baymax

For those of you with small children, we saw the movie with my nearly 3 year-old niece. While she was very tired and wanted to fall asleep, she couldn't help but stay awake to watch every scene! She fell in love with Baymax, like the rest of us. There are some intense graphics and very sad scenes, but nothing too traumatic for young kids. Kids over 6, preteens and even teenagers will definitely appreciate the humor and storyline a bit more. And I have to say, thank you Disney for giving us adults one of the funniest subtle adult humor scenes EVER.

I already can't wait to watch Big Hero 6 again, which I haven't said about a Disney movie in a loooong time. So if you're wondering if it's worth the cost, run, don't walk to your nearest theater to see Big Hero 6.

BONUS: Disney always creates wonderful animated shorts that air prior to their movies. If you are a dog-owner, Feast will have you tearing up instantly and wanting to run home to your dog. It also had me wanted to get pregnant immediately, but that's a story for a different day! Feast is very special, and worthy of airing before this wonderful, unique Disney movie.
