Deborah + Oliver: Save the Date Announcement

May 23, 2014

My Best Friend's Wedding (Stationery)

Deborah has been my best friend since age 6. We met through our dance studio throwing tootsie rolls in the local parade. No joke. We have been "dance partners" for as long as we both can remember, and experienced wearing some horrendous costumes together. She was a bridesmaid in my wedding last summer and I will be standing by her side this June. The weirdest part about getting married was feeling like we were finally "grown-ups". Her being there made it so real!

I've been having a blast helping her plan and DIY her wedding (it helped with the post-wedding planning let down). The fun started with her Save the Date announcements, which I created right before opening Elaina Lynn Design. I loved creating a design that fit their beautiful engagement photos and quirky style.

DeborahSavetheDate-Front-01 I can't wait to stand by her side this June and see her marry her new dancing partner! Stay tuned next week for their incredible hand-drawn wedding invitation & the response card I designed to match.

Month One of Self-Employment

May 5, 2014

Today marks the one month mark from my first day as a full-time creative entrepreneur. As I continue to grow and change as a business owner and designer, I thought it was important to mark this milestone in my life. My journey so far certainly has had it's bumps in the road, but I couldn't imagine doing anything else. Peony garden at Hatley Castle in Victoria B.C.

Right now I'm working on two very different, exciting projects that I can't wait to share. I've always heard the saying "When one door closes a window opens" but I never really believed it. Luckily, that seems to be the case so far. Coming out of my last career in advertising, I was pretty burnt out and my confidence was suppressed. Thankfully, friends & family from all over the country have been so supportive of my new business and have been spreading the word. Sometimes it is as simple as telling people what you are doing (face-to-face is typically the best way). As much as I cringe at the idea of "networking", the most valuable tool for getting new projects in the door is who you know. I also like to think that treating people with kindness goes a long way in people remembering and helping you down the road.

I say "cringe" because in reality I am truly an introvert (if you're familiar with the Myers-Briggs test, I'm an INFJ). This surprises many people because I have learned how to speak confidently in public and how to "turn it on" in a sales position. I worked in retail for 3 years, which is certainly an introvert's nightmare. But the other half of my personality type is being driven by a clear vision to serve the common good. It's what I think of as passion. For those of you who know me personally, you have most likely seen my passionate side come alive for an issue that I felt strongly about. Particularly if it had to do with injustice.

One of the biggest reasons I love helping people with their custom stationery stems from seeing so many brides and well-meaning friends trying to maneuver the complicated world of event planning & stationery. It's something that, unless you have the ability to devote the time and resources, can be very frustrating. Every time I was able to help someone out of the woods to find their perfect invitation (within their budget!) was a major victory for me. Being able to help people every day would be my dream job, and I hope to get there soon.

When I say it hasn't been all roses and peonies, I would have to say the biggest obstacle has been myself. My internal voice saying "are you really good enough to be doing this?" or "wow, look how far X business has come in such a short time" or "I'll find the inspiration for that new design tomorrow" are HORRIBLE. Staying motivated and confident are my two biggest hurdles, for which it's so important to keep perspective. Again, thank goodness for my wonderful family & friends who give me huge boosts of energy to make wonderful things.

If I've learned anything in the last month, it's put yourself out there! You never know what you might find. So now, back to putting my designs out to the world.

P.S. My husband and I seriously contemplated having a destination wedding at the Hatley Castle in Victoria B.C. (pictured above). The castle and views are absolutely breath-taking. Make sure to take the garden tour if you ever visit!

Welcome to elainalynn.com!

April 30, 2014

Hey Everyone! Welcome to the new site! Exciting news... I have created my first website! Learning how to self-host a Wordpress.org website has been both frustrating and fulfilling, but I did it! I recommend watching lots of tutorials. My favorites so far are this Skillshare class (although it is slightly outdated) and the WP Beginner site. I also couldn't have done it without my friend Kadee who is an awesome website designer herself!

I can already see that the site will be a constant work-in-progress thanks to my perfectionist trait, but I couldn't wait to share it with the world.

Also, if you are coming from my Wordpress.com blog, and would like to continue receiving updates via email, enter your email on the right handside to subscribe. Otherwise, you will only receive updates via your Wordpress.com Reader.

Or if you are a new reader, I would love to keep sharing my tips on being a creative entrepreneur and stationery designer with you. Use the form on the right hand side to subscribe!

Behind the Scenes: How I Design Pugs

April 8, 2014

I thought it'd be fun to show you a little peek behind the curtain of my pug designs. I recently posted a new postcard to my Etsy site for the upcoming Easter holiday featuring my pug Maisy. I was actually born on an Easter Sunday, so this holiday is very special to me.

It took several photo shoots to get the right shots. I use actual photos of the pugs and the lighting has to be just right with their head & tails at just the right angle.

Then I take the photos into Photoshop to crop out the background, or crop out their little heads. This is my favorite part because I'm left with an adorable photo of my girls!

I use Illustrator to turn the photos into vectors, which are able to be stretched to any size. These usually require lots of tiny adjustments to capture the essence of the pug. After adding a border and some text, this Easter card was ready for press!

I can't wait to send this card out to my family & friends!

If you would like your own digital copy to print & send to friends, use this limited time code SPRINGFLING50 to take 50% off the Easter card in my Etsy shop, or any other item in the shop! This offer will be available through Easter Sunday, April 20th.
